You should make make SurfDude for windows. I just got Safari 3 beta for Windows, and really like it, and I bet i’ll like surfdude too! Only problem is that I cant modify it in Windows to make it have the metal interface, the current one is better though
To the person above me: more popular does not equal better. If that were true, all of today’s most popular music artists would produce quality music, and that’s obviously not the case.
As for being unstable and having security problems? What planet are you on? Mac OS X is based on BSD UNIX which means it has government-strength security stability. Also, no virii for Mac OS X exist currently.
I’ll post an article debunking the theory of security through obscurity soon enough. You can read that when it comes out.
First of all I would like to say thank you for answering my comment.
I’ve ran windows on my computer and it works perfectly. I get enought of the annoying Mac OS X at school. And some other places because I know school computers aren’t always the greatest. Also there is Safari for windows correct? Well, can’t you get the rendering engine for Apple’s Safari on Windows to make your browser for windows? It seems really cool (honest). And also more people means that it is better, kind of. Even though I do think Mac is copying off Microsoft and Microsoft is copying off Apple, spotlight or whatever search? Start search? Widgets (Ok what the heck I think Microsoft went the better way by calling them ‘Gadgets’, and also Windows has the organized side bar). Mac OS X is based on UNIX, Unix (officially trademarked as UNIX®) is a computer operating system originally developed in 1969 by a group of AT&T employees at Bell Labs including Ken Thompson, Dennis Ritchie and Douglas McIlroy. I mean 1969? Also haven’t you seen iTunes and Quicktime? They were terrible on Windows Xp pro and they are terrible on Windows Vista Ultimate…it’s not Windows, Vista has been recoded with 15 million lines of code and some very sophisticated graphics. I do like the Safari 3 beta, but again it is…rather glitchy.
And what planet am I on? Earth were else would I be? The moon isn’t a planet it’s simply a large crator that Earth is keeping in place with it’s force.
Oh yeah and even Lunix has more users than Mac OS X.
Sorry to burst your bubble, but the better of which a product is the more people buy it.
Also you forgot Mac OS X vs 10.5 or whatever (the savy Apple marketing people call it Leopard…) is not on your timeline. I know its not out (or is it? I dunno), but they give enough information (no probably over enough) for somebody to type a paragraph on it’s system.
A couple of other questions and comments:
C:NET said that there was part or area in the brain that controls what you do/think, and you might not even be able to control it due to it over powering. This simply clearifies that you don’t have a choice of what you like better, it’s just random. Sure you can get whatever you want, but that doesn’t mean you’ll like it or enjoy it. I know cnet isn’t always right, or in a better lack of words smart, but they do make a point there.
What browser do you use? I mean the best browser for mac is Firefox version 2.0.0.6 or NetScape 9.0, or at last Opera 9…no wait Internet Explorer 5.3? I think even Internet Explorer 5.3 (or 5.23 I think) would probably be better than the default Safari…yeah I said I like it but I like those browsers better…so which one do you use?
Umm…I forgot what I was going to say…oh yeah…..why would people buy terrible music, and why would terrible artists be popular?
Yes, UNIX is much older than Windows, but the difference is that UNIX was developed with a multi-user design from day one, whereas Windows, originally being a GUI for DOS, was only single-user. This alone makes up a very large part of Mac OS X’s security; since its BSD UNIX base has always has multiple users, no software has ever expected unconditional access to the system, and therefore will not open huge security holes. The same cannot be said of Windows, which has some software that absolutely refuses to run correctly unless it is run in an administrator account.
Vista might have a lot changed, but it still has a number of old code left over from the Windows 3.1 and 95 days, which was flawed back then and is still flawed now. I don’t want Vista to be a partially rewritten Windows - I want the operating system in its entirety completely rewritten. Remove all old code holdovers, screw backwards compatibility, and PLEASE, PLEASE remove that damned piece of trash known as the Windows Registry.
As for MS copying Apple or Apple copying MS, Spotlight was in Tiger (OS X 10.4) from the first available betas. Vista, on the other hand, did not have the Start search until about 5-7 months after the first Tiger beta was released.
Apple software isn’t that great on Windows, that much has been established. I agree with that, but it’s understandable. Apple is an expert at programming for Mac OS, not programming for Windows. Apple software works amazingly well on a well-kept Mac.
And I’m sorry to burst your bubble, but Mac OS X does in fact have a larger piece of marketshare than Linux does. According to this article, Mac OS X will soon have 22 million users, which I’m sure is a higher amount than that of Linux users. This is further supported by this OS marketshare report, which places Mac OS (PPC and Intel) at about 5.14% and Linux at a measly 0.77%.
What browser do I use? I really love Safari 3 a lot. The text rendering, the way it handles custom CSS elements, and its web standards compliance are all great. I’m not using it at the moment, since it has an odd bug or two at the moment, but as soon as the final version is released I’ll be using that. Until then I’ll be using Camino, which is basically a version of Firefox that properly follows Apple UI guidelines and matches OS X better.
And why would people buy terrible music, you say? It’s called marketing. A good salesman could sell ice to an eskimo, so to speak. Same goes with most modern music and back in the day when modern operating systems were still in their infancy, Windows.
Like last time I would like to say thank you for replying so quickly.
I do not know what Windows Registry is, I know that it isn’t in Vista though.
Vista has been completely re-written, and it may use code from Xp but not from windows 3 or 95, it probably uses like the code to make the start engine function properly from Xp, but nothing else.
I know Spotlight was first, in that example Microsoft was copying Apple. Apple has though copied Microsoft.
And I’m sorry to burst your bubble (lol), but Lunix does have more users. It’s free, and it is (in my opinion) better than Mac OS X.
Apple? Well…if you say they make better software for their system, I’ll take your word on that, but on Windows? Yeah…They are terrible for making software on that. -Also Safari has a reputation of bad security flaws, therefore even if I had a Mac, I would use Firefox or even Internet Explorer 5.23 from Microsoft, as it can render pages nicely and correctly, and also can access some troublesome websites :P.
I know about Camino, seems good, but it’s not for Windows.
In Windows Safari uses Mac OS X’s native text smoothing program (Quartz type I believe), which makes everything look bold in Windows, I strongly prefer Clear Type on my Windows system.
And also I am kind of a young developer myself (younger than you would ever guess…), I have created my own browser, but it’s based on Internet Explorer 7 :), and also I would like to ask: Is making a browser kind of the same as Windows? Do you know how to put full screen? Mine has tabs and bookmarking, but I don’t know how to get a full screen mode.
Also the icon for surfDude is awesome How did you make it?
Also I think Firefox 2.0.0.6 looks better on Mac OS X, why? In windows vista it has an ugly blue background (which I installed a theme to get rid of :P), and a shiny glossy look which after a while can drive you crazy.
So thanks Hope you can answer as quick as last time…or quicker I hate waiting for the next day because then I’ll have to go to school…and well….then I’ll have to wait and that’s not fun
Also the current version of Safari is 3.0.3 BETA…how could it be in BETA in versions 3.0.1, 3.0.2 and now 3.0.3? They should fix updates but not do new version forum, its just like saying version 6 of Internet Explorer was always in beta…which it wasn’t. Apple (why would a company name their company after a fruit?) needs to be a bit more organized, same with Mac OS X. Also you forgot to add leopard to the Mac Timeline…I think Ill have to check but anyway…remember to do so!
And also, its all what you think is better. Thats why there is a choice of Operating Systems
Actually, the registry DOES still exist in Vista. The registry is where just about every single Windows program stores its settings, and is something that is not visible to the average user. The very idea of having a single file that stores the settings of every application is a very bad one. Software should have its own files for storing settings, so if they get corrupted it doesn’t put the settings of every other application in jeopardy.
As for Vista being a rewrite, you don’t quite understand. Microsoft DID NOT start from nothing with Windows Vista - they took source code from previous versions. Apple did the exact opposite for Mac OS X: they completely trashed all source code from their previous versions of Mac OS and started from scratch. Microsoft needs to mimic this movement.
Safari is actually much more secure than IE ever thought about being. When Safari for Windows was released, there were a few security issues, but they have been patched. Those issues were only in the Windows version, as well - the Mac version was never in danger. And I don’t know what websites you visit regularly, but just about every single site I’ve visited in Safari (which is a hell of a lot, I’m an internet junkie) has rendered perfectly.
Why do you keep mentioning IE 5 for Mac? It was an –ok– browser back before Safari, FF, and Camino, but it wasn’t anything incredible. It’s extremely behind the times now and has trouble rendering most popular websites (it even chokes on my website a little, as simple as it is).
And you mentioned Firefox for Macs… I personally do not like it, because it doesn’t do a lot of things the “Mac” way, it feels clunky, and very few of the UI elements (buttons, popup menus, etc) are drawn at the correct size. It’s ugly beyond the repair of a theme. Firefox is great on Windows, though - I would never use anything other than Firefox or Safari on a Windows machine.
The reason Safari is still in beta, yet has 0.1 etc versions is because Apple is holding back a portion of what finalizes Safari in Leopard. Safari will be finalized once Leopard is released.
Creating basic browsers is pretty easy under Mac OS X. Its similarity to creating a Windows browser depends on what programming language and IDE you’re using. I’m assuming that you’re using Visual Basic or something similar?
Thank you for the compliment on the icon. It’s pretty old and some of my first serious icon design work. I created with Adobe Photoshop 7 and the Photoshop plugin known as Iconfactory.
Yeah IE 5 doesn’t render that good…lol…and doesn’t have tabs or a pop-up blocker…-_-…but it’s an outdated browser.
And also registry? Hmmm…you can view them in Windows Explorer (which is like Finder on a mac-which you probably already know), but I didn’t know they were stored in one area.
Is Iconfactory good? I mean I use IconFX to edit the icons and use them as an icon, but I create the graphics in Microsoft Image Composer.
Yeah, my browser was created in Visual Basic And you can use Notepad (which is a very, very simple program from Microsoft bundled with every Windows system-which I’m guessing you also know that too lol ) to script. It may seem simple, but really what most users know is that it can be used as a program to script other programs or websites. Anyway, I use that to edit some simple stuff like the background, buttons, how you press the buttons…with system, standard and the pop-up type of button.
I took your icon and pasted in Microsoft Image Composer, then took off the surf board and replaced the orange. Then I made a glass look-like refresh button and flipped the surf board to one side, then made it look like it was tipping on the dark blue glassy-like refresh button. I pasted it in IconFX…had to re-size it…and then take off the white edges which I hate doing so badly…then I found a glitch that it wouldn’t update it so I had to rename it, delete the other file with the icon that had the white edges, then rename the old file to the current file, it still has some white edges…but you can barely see them.
So it’s Adobe Photoshop 7 and the Photoshop plug Iconfactory…I hope Iconfactory is for vista!
Is Adobe Photoshop 7 free? I remember it was bundled with Xp, but it’s not in vista so do they have a free version or a demo version?
Also you mentioned that Firefox was like clunky and doesn’t feel make like? Well I know you said it was beyond of a theme’s repair, but there are many themes that make it look like Safari, or something mac-related.
No I didn’t make any of these lol
One is called iSafari, which makes it look like Safari, and there is one called GrApple, which is just an amazing theme that I’m sure you’ll like.
There is also a theme called Macbird which is a bit clunky however, but it does look nice.
There is a really nice theme which makes the buttons small and have a glass effect that is blue…called Blue Ice.
By any chance do you know how to make a theme for Safari in Windows? In Windows it doesn’t have the brushed metal, but again it has like a gray sky look to it (try using Google to find a picture of it), and it uses the kind of like Quicktime on Windows buttons…like to open…close…and minimize or maximize the window, which it would be nicer if it looked more like on a mac with the apple buttons and everything, other than that Safari is just fine.
Again thank you so much for replying so soon (I’ve said that a million times haven’t I?)…and for giving me the links to those pages.
And hmmm…I really thought Microsoft re-coded vista, a lot of places like C:NET and even Microsoft themselves said that they did. But your right, they probably just used a lot of the Xp code, probably recoded or cleaned up few things though right?
Lol an Internet Junkie, I guess I’m that too since thats what I usually do on my computer
I can’t wait till Safari is created finally and out of beta mode.
Also I was wondering why we had to use our E-mail for the Reply, and why is it required? And could you replace name with ‘Title of Comment or Name’, so you can put the title of the comment or your name there.
Thanks And also do you have or have you ever used Opera browser? It’s secure and fast for people who want to feel safe on the web and hate waiting. And yes in my opinion I do think Opera has a Mac OS X feel, and to make it feel even more Mac OS X - ish (lol) you can get a theme–you don’t need to reboot Opera when uninstalling, installing, or putting a theme on or off–there are many, the soon to come Opera 9.5…well according to Opera Software the company that makes Opera, is making Opera more Mac-ish and including a theme to make it look really Mac-ish (lolz).
Opera 9.2.3 (the current version) also comes with a theme to use the Native style of your operating system.
Photoshop is not free. It’s a commercial program that costs a fairly large chunk of money… the closest thing you could get would be Photoshop Elements or Paint.NET, which are like watered-down versions of Photoshop. Iconfactory should work fine in Vista.
Something that a lot of Windows users don’t understand when a Mac user tells them that Firefox feels clunky is that a lot of it isn’t changed by the theme. It’s beyond just the general look - Firefox itself simply does not follow many of the Mac interface “rules”, such as the size of popup menus and buttons. There are a large number of small details that must be correct in order to make a program feel like it belongs on Mac OS. For other reasons, Firefox is not nearly as snappy as it is in Windows or Linux - the interface is laggy, and can sometimes take a second to respond. Trust me, I’ve tried just about every Mac Firefox theme out there and they simply do not fix Firefox’s problems.
Opera suffers from a similar problem. It’s not as laggy as Firefox for Mac, but it also fails to follow Mac UI guidelines. Compare the following screenshots:
As for themes on Safari for Windows, I have no idea. I would guess that it stores the images that make up the gradient and buttons in a DLL somewhere. I have no idea.
And no, you cannot see the registry from inside Windows Explorer. You have to use an app that comes with Windows called RegEdit (warning: messing with your registry can seriously screw up your system, be careful).
Oh yes, one more thing - don’t take this personally, but please don’t treat me as if I’ve never used Windows. It’s certainly not the case, seeing how I have used and become familiar Windows 3.1, 95, 98, ME, 2000, and XP in the past.
First of all, sorry about treating out that as if you’ve never used Windows. I do know that you are very experienced in computer technology but I just wanted to refresh your memery since I know you like Mac OS X :).
Firefox is a bit clunky, even on Windows, so yes…and I see why it is beyond the repair of a theme.
Also thanks so much for showing my the mac browser done right! Why? I’ve been looking all over the internet to find a picture of Safari without that ugly metal interface, because I knew you could modify programs easily in Mac OS X. The funny part is-a couple months ago I got an image of Safari 1.0 (like the only full size high quality image I found…it had to be of 1.0 lol) with the kind of ugly metal interface, I ended up taking that away in Image Composer and replaces it will and aqua interface…turned out well but it clashed and I lost most of my data -_-, I mean Windows only crashes a couple of times per hour, usually why I use Opera as it has anti-freeze technology (which is why its not as glitchy as Firefox).
I don’t think I’ll be opening up Windows RegEdit…I’ve heard of that thing and I was told to backup all my files before even opening it…but I never will because I can mess up things easily on my computer as it’s really…really hard to find a button or text to restore things to default…I think it changes everytime…
Yeah I was guessing Safari stored it’s images like the gradient background and buttons somewhere, but how in the world would anybody find out what Apple named that file? I mean Microsoft names files explorer.filename for IE, and Apple names things like appdocgraph.filename….no thats probably not a file name of something it’s just a poor example of what I was talking about lol
Is there anyway to get Iconfactory as a program and not just an add-on or plugin?
And is there any way that surfDude can be for Windows? Im guessing no, since you would need a Windows system (doesnt a mac come with Boot Camp or whatever?), and the fact that you work on it as a hobby…And why make a version for Windows when you don’t like Windows, right?
It’s just like making a statue or flag of the enemy you are in war with lol
And I know you are probably going to go crazy if I say this one more time…
Thanks for answering so quickly….I won’t say it again but I will this time because your answering so quickly
Iconfactory is only available as a plugin. It has no separate application.
I won’t be creating surfDude for Windows - not so much because I hate Windows, but moreso because I’d have to rewrite everything for the Windows version. surfDude is programmed in Objective-C and Cocoa, which is Mac OS X’s native programming language/API combination. It also uses WebKit (the web page renderer that Safari uses) for its rendering engine, which does not exist in a form separate from Safari on Windows. I also do not know any Visual Basic or C++, preventing me from programming for Windows in the first place.
And you say your computer freezes/crashes two times an hour? That’s terrible! At one point, I had been using my Mac for a 37 days straight without a single crash or need to restart. Even then, it was still running great. The cause of the shutdown was a temporary power outage, so if it weren’t for the faulty power it would have run longer…
No not two times an hour…if you want more exact then it would be about 3 to 4 times per 2 hours, it happend in Windows Xp, and it happens in Vista. I didn’t know a mac didn’t freeze. At school they always do but again schools don’t always have the best computers, and I know it would kind of be impossible for the Windows version lol.
And also I’m not ever going to use your E-mail, but it says it your E-mail in the picture found on the link that you gave me, the mac browser done right link. Just saying, I didn’t know if you didn’t want it there or you didn’t really care.
Also the links aren’t working so I had to direct my browser to iindigo3d.com/blog/?page_id=6
You’ve changed your website a lot, first the website with the background that you could change, then the blue and white one with the links on the left, then the one based on Bogart or something? And now this one, which I have to honestly say this is the best website you’ve ever done!
Ummm ok I just switched browsers to Internet Explorer 7…Your website looks kind of messed up using it.
Kind of like the message you had a long time ago, when you used Internet Explorer 6 it would say ‘Why are you using Internet Explorer 6? IE6 makes this website look like poo!’ lol. It would say that if you used IE7 Beta too though, but it was a funny message
Heh, thanks. This design is completely my creation and is based on nothing.
Also, although I’m a little sad to say it, I will be closing down the blog-based non-blog pages (such as this one) in favor of new “real” coded pages. The new pages may or may not have a comment system, I’ll just have to see how things work out.
A person, who really knows someth. about papers for money should admire your supreme research. I opine that the buy essay paper service could utilize that for the written research paper examples.
All persons at shool want to have the doctoral degree and they purchase the custom papers just about this good post at the writing services, but very oft they search for the outcomes just about essay writers.
Hi,
Really nice work! Your article is unique, informative, interesting and is captivating attention of the readers. You have emphasized on a good point.

I have to say that surfdude looks really interesting. It is very lightweight. Can I ask: what rendering engine are you using.

Feel free to comment,
Yes, UNIX is much older than Windows, but the difference is that UNIX was developed with a multi-user design from day one, whereas Windows, originally being a GUI for DOS, was only single-user.
Also the icon for surfDude is awesome
How did you make it?
Also I think Firefox 2.0.0.6 looks better on Mac OS X, why? In windows vista it has an ugly blue background (which I installed a theme to get rid of :P), and a shiny glossy look which after a while can drive you crazy.
So thanks
Hope you can answer as quick as last time…or quicker I hate waiting for the next day because then I’ll have to go to school…and well….then I’ll have to wait and that’s not fun
Linux does not have more users than Mac OS. Check the links that I gave in the previous reply for proof. It may be free, but they fact that many basic tasks still require the terminal/commandline scares most computer users enough to stay away from it. Linux may be extremely popular in the future, but right now it’s still a touch too geeky for the average user. I’ll repeat the links I put in my previous comment here for easy access:
http://blogs.guardian.co.uk/technology/2007/03/03/mac_os_x_user_base_heading_for_22_million.html

Thanks for the info
Yeah IE 5 doesn’t render that good…lol…and doesn’t have tabs or a pop-up blocker…-_-…but it’s an outdated browser.
And also registry? Hmmm…you can view them in Windows Explorer (which is like Finder on a mac-which you probably already know), but I didn’t know they were stored in one area.
Is Iconfactory good? I mean I use IconFX to edit the icons and use them as an icon, but I create the graphics in Microsoft Image Composer.
Yeah, my browser was created in Visual Basic
And you can use Notepad (which is a very, very simple program from Microsoft bundled with every Windows system-which I’m guessing you also know that too lol
) to script.
Thanks
And also do you have or have you ever used Opera browser?
Bye! -Reply soon again
Also—Safari doesn’t have full screen. Or does it? Well…it doesn’t on the the version for windows.
Opera 9 (Mac browser done wrong): http://www.opera.com/img/products/desktop/screenshots/mac/myopera.jpg
Safari 3 (Mac browser done right):

Oh yeah and you know you can save your bookmarks under the bookmark menu? Lol
OMG! This new website looks AMAZING!
Just amazing!! Wow! Just wow!!
Interesting thing !
